Verbarium

You are not likely to remember a new word unless you see it often enough. Even if you see it fairly often (for example, if you use flashcards) most of the time you will only learn to recognize it passively. You will still have trouble actually using it in your own speech or writing. Verbarium addresses both of these problems. You give it a list of words you'd like to learn, and it sends you complete sentences containing those words - but in each sentence the target word is replaced with a gap. You have to fill the gap using the correct word from your list. You have to actively recall and use the word, not merely recognize it. That is why we call Verbarium a vocabulary activator.
For example, suppose you want to learn these words: "notorious, impede, copious, reticent, cursory, insipid, squalid, seethe, furtive, hefty, waive, meticulous, gloat, endorse, expunge". Or perhaps you already know, or think you know, what they mean. You can recognize them when you see them in a book. But can you actually use them when the right context comes up? If not, you only know them passively. They are not in your active vocabulary.
Verbarium is the magic wand that can turn passive vocabulary into active vocabulary. We gave it that 15-word list, here are some of the actual sentences we received:
• A ............... check with music stores in Johannesburg revealed that many stock large selections of her CDs.
• Don't stand there ...............ing over it.
• The most ............... case of an animal not breeding in captivity is that of the elephant.
• Men became tired of an ............... conformity to a standard which derived no authority from nature or reason.
• We certainly don't ............... that.
• The tradition of Russian nesting eggs, intricately painted with elaborate designs, showcases the ............... craftsmanship and artistic talent of Russian artisans.
• When the champagne came — of course Dan had provided that — he poured it out ...............ly and dismissed the waiter.
Go ahead and fill the gaps. Better still, try filling them without looking at the list. See what we mean?
That is what Verbarium does. If you struggled to fill the gaps, load the list into Verbarium and give it a spin. You'll be surprised how much easier it gets after a few days, as the words become part of your active vocabulary.
If you want to be really thorough, try combining Verbarium with other bots to produce the saturation effect. For example, if you run the same word list in Verbarium, Jumblebee and Prattlebox at the same time, your brain will soon realize that resistance is futile, it will have no choice but to remember the words.
